TURTURRO WATCH(tm): Update for The Week of June 12, 2005

turturro watch-tn.jpgUPDATE, Saturday, June 11, 2005, 1:15:50 PM: John Turturro, walking past the corner of President St. and Prospect Park West, gave a passerby directions to Ocean Parkway. He then proceeded in a northeasterly direction, toward Union St., where he waited briefly at the crosswalk, then crossed over to Grand Army Plaza.

PICTURED: Mr. Turturro, wearing sport shoes and pulling a grocery cart, interacts with fellow Brooklynites at the GAP greenmarket, still in full swing. Click here for full image.

STATUS REPORT: It has been nearly 1 year and 9 months since our last John Turturro update. As reported Thursday, October 23, 2003 at 03:51 PM, Turturro was spotted striding purposefully past the Blockbuster near Flatbush and 8th Aves., wearing a dangly earbud and engaging in an intense cell phone call. As he strode past, Turturro pinched the microphone component between his left thumb and index finger, drawing it closer to his mouth in an attempt to improve the call quality.

At 8 am this Thursday, June 16, cyclists will embark on a Vigil Ride from 5th Avenue and Warren Street in Park Slope (Where Elizabeth Padilla was killed) to the steps of City Hall to memorialize 200+ NYC bicyclists killed since 1995.

NYPD data: 9 cyclists have perished in crashes this year, representing a 50% increase in fatalities over the same period in 2004.

PAUL STEELY WHITE (Transportation Alternatives): “The sheer volume of vehicles and the heedlessness of drivers leave no room for error on these streets … the City must create more greenways and protected, on-street bike lanes … Bike routes must be at least 5 feet wide with a 2-foot buffer …” Details after the jump.

Woot! Daily Heights in PoynterOnline

Woo woo, you guys are making history! Congratulations, “citizen journalists.” Last night, DH contributor Miranda G. alerted me to the article in PoynterOnline, and sure enough, Daily Heights just showed up in my Google News Alerts…

The Poynter Institute, a school for journalists, future journalists, and teachers of journalists, has an article up called “The 11 Layers of Citizen Journalism” [Steve Outing in PoynterOnline].

Daily Heights is situated at Layer 7 in Murrow’s Inferno (“7. The stand-alone citizen-journalism site: Unedited version”).

While we can’t promise you fame or riches, we can promise you this: what you write for Daily Heights will get read, partly because Google likes us and partly because we have an actual and substantial audience of local people that checks back regularly. Last Wednesday, for the first time, we had more than 1,000 unique visitors in a single day.

What do you want to write about?

THE MERLES Play Hank Williams at Grand Army Plaza [Video]

Here’s my new favorite acoustic streetcorner Hank Williams cover band, caught live this past Saturday afternoon at Grand Army Plaza:

The band is called The Merles, and they’ve played small Park Slope clubs and bars, including Cafe Steinhof. They told me they have no upcoming gigs. If anyone knows how to get in touch with The Merles, please send the contact info our way, K?

Neighborhood Bird Lays Egg

shelleys_bird.jpgShelley writes: “This is Cheeto the Hatebird. She bites everyone, including me… She has a vocabulary of the words ‘cheeto’ and ‘cheese’. also she imitates my mom’s security alarm, mimics our sneezes, does the ‘sexy whistle,’ and likes to ride on peoples heads. She enjoys tearing newspaper and plants into strips for fun. Sometimes this includes fine literature or artwork. She hangs out on a disco ball hanging from our mantle and spins around. she is a good bird, despite her vampiric tendencies.”

“She belonged to my mother in Florida for seven years, but mom couldn’t deal with the biting after a while, so I agreed to adopt her. Soon after moving her to brooklyn, she built a nest and laid an egg … She is currently building another nest, so maybe I will be treated with another tiny egg. PS: She really likes to sing along to dub and classical music.”

Ice Cream Truck Crushes Biker in Park Slope

UPDATE: IMPROMPTU MEMORIAL SERVICE Brooklyn bikers are planning to converge on the intersection of 5th and Warren [Google Maps] at approximately 8 PM tonight to pay their respects to Elizabeth Padilla.

From the be-careful-out-there dept.

NANCY DILLON and JONATHAN LEMIRE wrote in the DAILY NEWS: “A bicyclist who tried to squeeze between two trucks on a bustling Brooklyn street was crushed to death yesterday after she fell underneath one of the rigs, police said.”

“As Elizabeth Padilla, a 28-year-old lawyer, attempted to pass a 10-wheel Edy’s Ice Cream truck, the driver of another truck parked on Fifth Ave. in Park Slope opened his door, witnesses said … Padilla swerved to avoid the door but hit the side of the moving ice cream truck, causing her to topple under the vehicle’s large rear wheels … She was killed instantly, just six blocks from her apartment.”

The uncle of Padilla’s husband told the Daily News that she was a Cornell Law graduate and that she worked as an attorney for a nonprofit group: “She was a guide for a blind man in a bike race … That says it all. That’s the type of person she was.”

BIKE LANE BLOCKED? Too bad the Daily News article doesn’t list the cross street. According to J., writing on a local biker’s list, there’s a pretty good chance that she was riding in a marked bike lane… more than half of 5th Ave. from Flatbush Ave. down to 20th St. is well-marked as such.
