How to Make Your Own Parking Spot

Here’s how to make your own parking spot in 60 seconds or less – by ripping out a “No Standing” sign, like this Atlantic Yards worker did, and got caught red handed and was youtubed:

This showed up on theAtlantic Yards Report, which reported that there’s a “No Standing” sign on the south side of Pacific Street (between Sixth and Carlton Avenues) that construction workers uprooted in a quest for free parking, and it was not the first time: one sign was pulled out in mid-December, and just a week later, its replacement was again pulled out.

The deed caught on video occurred at about 6:15 am on Friday, as a construction worker parked next to the sign. If you fast-forward to about 1:10, you can see him rocking the sign with his hands until it’s dislodged. At 3:16, he moves the sign to the north side of Pacific Street, near the MTA’s Vanderbilt Yard.

Free parking? According to Atlantic Yards Report, this may be the responsibility of Empire State Development, the state agency overseeing Atlantic Yards construction, and “has the power to crack down on developer Forest City Ratner, its subcontractors, and ultimately their employees.”

The level of jerkdom here is high, but perhaps not uncommon: “I think a number of people are jerks to this degree, they just lack the upper body strength to actually follow through,” tateinbk writes on Brooklynian (read more discussion).

Parking Becomes Even More Impossible in Prospect Heights

new parking spot-tn.jpg
From the
I-Thought-You-Couldn’t-Do-This-Anymore dept.:

Observe the freshly poured concrete, sloping gently downward toward the curb, its edge decisively painted a bold and forbidding yellow.

Observe the brand new black metal gate with its prominent NO PARKING sign.

This can mean only one thing: You can count on spending an extra 1.89 minutes cruising for a parking spot next time you’re foolish enough bring your non-garaged vehicle back to Prospect Heights after 6 pm.

No Street Cleaning THURSDAY

the-ascension-of-christ-1958.jpgAlternate side parking regulations are suspended on Thursday, May 5 for holiday observance (“Solemnity of Ascension,” which sounds like it must be a Catholic holiday). All other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.

UPDATE: Heather found out (see Comments) that Solemnity of Ascension is a feast recalling the completion of Christ’s mission on earth: “I had no idea this is worthy of suspension of alternate side parking regulations. Maybe it should be called the “Solemnity of Suspension.”

News Flash: IT SNOWED; Boy Makes Bunny Slope Igloo

Deborah Kolben of the Daily News was the first to break the story of 5-year-old Prospect Heights resident Sam Ritter, who "decided he was sick of
sledding but trudged off anyway with his dad to Prospect Park … ‘This is an igloo with bunny slopes,’ explained Sam, who was busy engineering a giant snow sculpture, complete with tunnels."

Heads up: The snow melted, and parking rules are in effect again. Don’t try anything funny.

Alternate Side Parking: Street Cleaning Suspended

Alternate side parking regulations are suspended through Saturday, January 29th to facilitate snow removal. Parking meters remain in effect throughout the city.

Update:
The next "official" date is February 9, a DOUBLE BONUS street cleaning holiday, where you can keep your car idle in observance of Asian Lunar New Year, or Ash Wednesday, or both. Go look at the entire 2005 calendar of street cleaning suspensions.

Street Cleaning: Alternate Side Parking Rules calendar

Here’s the current (2005) Alternate Side Parking Rules Suspension calendar. You can also download the PDF from NYC.gov. Note that on major legal holidays (marked with asterisk), stopping, standing, and parking are permitted, except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect 7 days a week (for example, "No Standing Anytime"). However, parking meters will not be in effect on major legal holidays.
