NYT Picks up the Mama Duke's Story

You heard it here first (thanks to sje for the tip), and thanks to NYT reporter Jennifer Bleyer, a soon-to-be Prospect Heights resident, for a great article!

” … Local residents took notice when Janice Combs, the mother of the hip-hop mogul Sean Combs, opened Mama Duke in 2001, and when the restaurant suddenly closed, they took notice again. Rumors spread quickly on a Prospect Heights Web log, dailyheights.com, about why Mama Duke was no more …

SterlingGuy Cracks Secret Cigar Stash at Yelison

yelison.jpgSterlingGuy writes: “I was hankering for a cigar the other night and went to Yelison (small store next to Tom’s Diner, the corner of Washington and Sterling) to see what kind of trashy smoke I could get to go with a bottle of cheap rum. The guy handed me some thin cigarellos and my face must have betrayed my mild disgust and deep disappointment. So he immediately reached under the counter and came up with two nice fat cigars (I had a friend with me) from what looked like his own secret supply. They were cheap and not great, but at least they looked like real cigars and lasted longer than five minutes. Fat cigars and cheap rum — perfect for a warm night with friends!”

“I was surprised this guy did this, since he has never been very friendly, and was even less so after I tried my gringo Spanish on him. But when he dropped that stogie on the counter, my eyes lit up and he gave me a big nod and a smile.”

“Later that week, on one of those super-hot nights, I went to buy beer and he traded the warm bottles I had grabbed from the cooler for some Coronas he had stashed in his freezer. I like to think the two events are connected, like I passed the neighborhood cigar test.

Hey, it’s Ellis G, the Cobble Hill chalk artist known for copyrighting his sidewalk creations. He told me that his work has been written up recently in the Daily News and Time Out. Here he is taking a break from his waiter job at Sorrel, the “New American” restaurant at the corner Carlton and St. Marks.

Today on "That's Our Ratner!": Shady Backroom Dealings?

Dan Goldstein of Develop Don’t Destroy says today that there is a “secret” Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Forest City Ratner and New York City/State…

Goldstein: “This second MOU lays out plans for an even larger development, and more development rights, for Bruce Ratner than the public MOU.”

“… The second MOU, or ‘MOU 2,’ allows new development rights for FCR to develop millions more square feet over their Atlantic Center Mall and the PC Richards/Modell’s mall … These sites are directly adjacent to the disclosed footprint of Ratner’s proposed Brooklyn Atlantic Yards (BAY) …

“MOU 2 also refers to a mysterious previous MOU from May 2004.”

“It also provides for a state takeover of yet more acres in addition to the 21 acres in the public MOU. This would add more than one million square feet to what is already 8 million square feet of development in the BAY plan, and what is already an overburdened traffic intersection and public transportation hub.”

I MOU. MOU 2?

YUMMY BAGELS: Apparently Not So Yummy After All

yummy bagels.jpg

Looks like Superior Suds, Inc. has given up on the bagel stand fronting their Flatbush Ave. laundromat. Fresh bagels and dirty socks–how could anyone resist?

This was a bit of a shock, given the limited number of decent bagel sources in the immediate area. Maybe someone’s gearing up for Yummy Bagels 2.0? There’s a “space for rent” sign out front, but I should have asked anyway…
