Oriental Pavilion, Prospect Park. Brooklyn, New York. Frank says, “I laid on my back to get this shot, almost in the snow.”
OVERHEARD at the laundromat a few doors down from Met Foods on Vanderbilt: the TWO-WAY LAUNDER CENTER on Underhill Ave. near Sterling Pl., which caught fire about month ago, may not re-open until June or July because the owners are waiting for an insurance check so they can replace damaged machinery. (Keeping in mind that third-hand news, overheard at a laundromat, may have no bearing or reality whatsoever.)
BETHANY JENKINS and HUGH SON report in the Daily News: The city Health Department reports that 1 in 3 women in Prospect Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, East New York and Brownsville are overweight; Brooklynwide, only 24% of women are overweight. However, the article fails to say how the Health Department defines “overweight,” and it’s not clear if “1 in 3” applies to those neighborhoods individually or collectively.
Bonus: It took not one but two writers to mess up the lead (as of 4:51 PM, subject/verb agreement error). But hey, Microsoft Word doesn’t give you one of those green squigglies when you type “Brooklyn woman are losing the battle of the bulge.”
Discussion going on right now on the Craigslist NYC Housing Forum: “A couple friends of mine, and I, are currently looking for a new place starting may. We are all undergrad students with full time jobs, and in trying to decide on locations mutually feasible for our work and school (midtown/downtown work, NYU and Brooklyn College school) we’re growing more and more interested in the area of prospect heights/crown heights in brooklyn. Specifically, the area around the 2/3 and 4/5 trains. Does anyone know this area well, and have any advice? We’ve walked around there a few times at night and during rush hour to get a feel, it seems to be real block-by-block, but the shadiest parts we saw still didn’t seem that bad. Any advice/ideas/comments? …”
If that doesn’t catch your interest, then maybe you’ll want to go read about the Erotic Art Party for couples taking place in a 1600-square-foot loft “in or around Prospect Heights” later this month.
Step aside, Home Heating Oil. Knitting is getting hot, hot, hotter than hot hot Vanderbilt Avenue.
Now, Mary writes in to remind you about the Knitting Circle at Prospect Perk Cafe (corner of Flatbush and Sterling Place), every Wednesday night from 8:00-11:00 PM: “Newbies welcome. Just show up. Very casual. Small group.” It’s in the DAILYHEIGHTS Events Calendar, which is filling out quite nicely and quite rapidly. Go add your event now.
Tony says of the Prospect Perk Knitting Circle: “The people in the group are a friendly mix of moms, 30-somethings and ‘dog people’.” We’re still waiting to hear when the Freddy’s Knit Night segment airs on NBC’s Jane Pauley show. Stay tuned…

Here’s Kevin and Brendan Mooney standing in front of the pub (click photo to enlarge). I happened to be wearing my Mooney’s Pub T-shirt, so I stopped to say hello. The elder Mooney said he hoped this photo would help “sell papers,” and the younger asked if we would be interested in updating the Mooney’s website. That would be great, but I can’t find a Mooney’s website anywhere. Anybody?

How cool would it be to have something like the Dumbo Art Under the Bridge multi-day festival right here in Prospect Heights? Well, it just may happen, and this weekend, you can help plan it. Atim writes: “I am setting the first Prospect Heights Arts Festival planning meeting for Saturday March 12 at 4pm at Heart of Brooklyn, A Cultural Partnership, 789 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11238; 718-638-7700.
The goals of the first meeting are to present and discuss the concept (a 2-day Fall festival designed to identify ProHo as a vibrant center for artists, including filmakers and musicians)
2. Understand what it takes to do it (via the example of Dumbo Arts Festival)
3. Planning and funding issues
4. Support by Commmunity Board 8, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Borough President, Council Members and State Senator
5. Non-profit or not?
Can you help? If so, RSVP to Atim at [email protected] or call 718-638-4288 and leave a message.
set speed on Borough President Marty Markowitz last night at the PHNDC meeting: he “made a showing and I must say I was quite disappointed by his performance. For an elected official … to read off a 5 minute statement verbatim from a sheet of paper shows utterly, a lack of respect for his citizens.”
Markowitz, who took no questions, basically stated he would be happy to see Atlantic Yards developed by anybody–absolutely anybody, not necessarily Bruce Ratner–as long that somebody has financing, a basketball team and a neat website. Not sure if Markowitz stayed for Letitia James’s comments, but he did appear to leave in a hurry.
