Former Peralta's to Become Restaurant?

peraltas-tn.jpgSusan checks in with a report: “Walked past the old Peralta Supermarket on Carlton and St. Mark’s place and saw it full of renovators. The Work Permit says it’s getting a kitchen update to the existing store.”

Any ideas? Also, check out this engaging “he said, he said” article about the demise of this neighborhood bodega. According to the article, Peralta’s landlord, which “failed to renew” the shop’s $1,173-per-month lease, bought the brownstone for $20,000 in 1968 and sold it last August for $1.2 million.

UPDATE: Laura B. reports that there’s a thread about this today on Chowhound’s Outer Boroughs Message Board. The food will be “American,” according to a guy with a French accent, and will involve “lots of wine”…

HOME HEATING OIL Puts Prospect Heights on Map

HHO-in-TONY.jpgThanks to Isa for pointing out that Vanderbilt Ave.’s own Home Heating Oil made the front cover of this month’s Time Out New York (bottom right corner of the cover–the most desirable of all newsstand real estate!).

Check out this excerpt from the article, which speaks of HHO in the most glowing of terms:

“Home heating deity François B (fittingly nominated for ‘Most Eligible Entrepreneur’ in this year’s Home Heating Stylez magazine World Heating Awards) is behind this affair, which is focused on heating the home in all of its glorious, warmth-drenched forms (vintage wood-burning stove, electric heat, and what he’s calling ‘outer-planetary’), but mostly oil. A glimpse into the subversive world of home heating, at a time when the rich tapestry that is ProHo needs it most.”

DEALS: Digital Photo Prints for 15 Cents on Flatbush

[NEW “DEALS” CATEGORY on DAILYHEIGHTS: If you find a decent deal at a Prospect Heights business, let us know: [email protected]]

can-o-matic 1970_cmm70.jpgHow cheap can digital photo developing get? If it seems absurd that you once paid 49 cents per print to those extortionists at Ofoto (who still want 25 cents per print and shipping $1.49 and up), consider that you can get 4×6 prints for 15 cents apiece at Mailboxes of Park Slope.

To get this deal, you have to upload your files to pephoto.com and then go pick them up at the store.

As for the quality of the prints: who knows? But for 15 cents each, it’s worth a try. If it’s awful, there’s always Winkflash, which offers very good film-quality prints for 16 cents a piece, and 99-cent flat-rate shipping.

New Secret Way to Get to DAILYHEIGHTS

proho1.gifThanks to a $4.99 domain sale at Yahoo!, “ProHo.org” will now bring you to DAILYHEIGHTS, straightaway. The content is the same, but you’ll save a few keystrokes, and you can take pride in using the special “locals only” entrance to the site.

ProHo and “The PH” seem to be the most popular and intuitive nicknames for the neighborhood, at least in this Nickname your neighborhood thread.

Muddy Waters Storefront: Still Vacant

muddy waters space-tn.jpgHow long has Muddy Waters been gone now? And how much is New Millennium Real Estate (718-499-2000) asking for this 675-square-foot space, anyway? There HAS been a lot of interest, and sources say that they were originally asking for something like $75k-$85k for the key to space plus rent around $1,200.

Then, about a week ago on Craigslist (Feb. 25) they were asking $3500/mo. (nothing posted about a key fee) and were advertising it as an “espresso bar” space, if memory serves correctly. So, if you can sell 7,000 cappuccinos a month and don’t mind just breaking even, then this might be the space for you.

Anyway, the Craigslist posting is now expired, and they don’t appear to have relisted the space, so maybe a new tenant is getting ready to move in?
