FLATBUSH BBQ SAGA: Hardware King Decries "Slum Lord" Story as "Outright Lie"

Exclusive! Where to begin? How about June 25, when sje shocked us all with the news that Flatbush BBQ joint Mama Duke’s was shutting down. An anonymous Guest poster then suggested that the owners might be looking to reopen on Vanderbilt Ave., and stated, quite provocatively, a completely unsubstantiated rumor that “The reason they are leaving is because that predator/slum lord Pintchick raised their rent from 5k to 7k.”

Now, in the “Flatbush BBQ Scene in Crisis” thread, Matthew Pintchik himself advances the story:

“For the record, during the month of June 2005, Mrs. Janice Combs asked PINTCHIK if we would permit her to break her lease at the restaurant. The lease was not up until February of 2006 ! Quite frankly we were dissapointed that she wanted to close … At NO time was there ever a discussion about a lease renewal …”

“When a reporter recently visited our office from a local paper [hmm… wonder where they got the lead? 🙂 -ed.], she verified the facts. The reporter explained that since Mrs. Combs closed the restaurant for reasons not relating to the rent or her landlord, there probably would not be a story written. Too bad ! I would have enjoyed having the facts published. I felt that since this posting was an outright lie I would respond. “It’s sad that some people have nothing to do but make up garbage.”

[We called Pintchik and talked to Matthew – he confirmed it was in fact him who posted these comments to Daily Heights.]

[woot!] Medusa Makes the 'News

Check it out! Medusa recently waxed nostaglic about the closing of the YWCA gym and pool in the Daily Heights message boards… and now her quote has been picked up by the Daily News: “It makes me a little sad as I learned how to swim in that pool and took gymnastics for many years in the gym … But the plan looks good, honorable and in keeping with their mission.”

Also, thanks to Daily News reporter ELIZABETH HAYS for properly attributing the quote to Dailyheights.com. We are glad that we can serve as a resource for local media–particularly for the Daily News, which consistently has outstanding coverage of issues that affect Prospect Heights.

And yes, by complete coincidence (pinky swear), we happened to reference Elizabeth’s “Yummy Outdoor Getaways” article today (see post below about JRG Fashion Cafe).

Miami or Prospect Heights?: See and be seen in the rooftop lounge at the JRG Fashion Cafe. Relax in a deck chair or at a romantic table for two above the urban hustle while sampling mango salmon, jerk chicken and other Caribbean-inspired fare.”

Mount Prospect Park is Going to Be Redesigned…

…and you can tell them what you think, Wednesday evening. Easternpkwy writes: “If you are interested in Mount Prospect Park (its condition, its security, its usage, or its potential), do not miss this meeting:”

Wednesday, July 20, from 6:00 to 8:00
Boardroom, Brooklyn Museum

Easternpkwy continues: “Community Board 9’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture committee will be discussing some specific proposals for redesigning the park. We hope that, from this meeting, we can organize a working group of neighbors and park users who can further develop plans to improve Mount Prospect and draw it more closely into the fabric of the neighborhood. Everything is ‘on the table’ at this early date.”

“If you (like me!) use the park to relax, to walk your dogs, for the playground, please come out and get informed and involved. If you DON’T use the park, for whatever reason, and have some suggestions that would make it a friendlier place, please come out as well!”

COMING SOON: Korean/Asian Restaurant on Vanderbilt

PR-Korean%20fans1.jpgsje writes in the mad hot Daily Heights message boards: “I heard the lease was signed today for a new Korean restaurant on Vanderbilt Ave. from a very reliable source. Very excited about it! … It’s supposed to open September, October at the latest … Corner of Vanderbilt and St. Marks. I heard tonight that it’s going to be Korean/Asian cuisine.”

crunkyteen adds: “I hear it’s a Korean bbq joint from the guy from Soda and the gal from Le Gamin [who is Korean-ed].”

ana.log says, “let’s hope it’s better than the Indian place. I was excited about those guys too.”

BUILD Lays Down the Gauntlet on Daily Heights [Exclusive!]

normal_DC1-tn.jpgMarie Louis of BUILD writes on DAILY HEIGHTS: “I think it would be great to have a public debate between BUILD and DDDb on the value of Atlantic Yards and the CBA to our community. We believe in our mission of using the development process to create and connect people to sorely needed employment, business, affordable housing and educational opportunities. We must close the wealth, unemployment and poverty gaps that has rendered our community into a state of socio-economic apartheid. Pockets of wealth in the midst of neighhorhoods grappling with extreme rates of poverty, unemployment and underclass entrapment.”

“Instead of complaining about challenges or ignoring them BUILD recognized the hope and the potential to connect people to opportunties through the Atlantic Yards / Nets Arena project. Opportunities to help make a dent in the local unemployment and poverty crises by changing the paradigm for how development transpires in neighborhood. Consequently [BUILD] launched a movement to secure a Community Benefits Agreement for Atlantic Yards- Announced at our first conference on Sunday, February 9, 2004 on the steps of City Hall.”

We praise God for blessing us with the success of signing a CBA on Monday, June 27, 2005.”

“Again, my parting words are: I challenge Develop Don’t Destroy to a public Debate on The Value of FCRC’s Atlantic Yards and why it would be detrimental to our community for it to not move forward.”

Our Crime Numbers are Now Freaky

Jose writes Daily Heights: “Via a Gothamist post, I came across the crime stats for our lovely precinct, the good ol’ reliable 7-7. While the 2004 crimes were down compared with 1993, the current numbers are freaky. There’s been a 66.6%[5] jump in rapes versus the 3 of 2004 for the last 28 days, and 75% increase in murders. Ahh, the price of cheap rent.”
