PEFORM A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS—MAKE A NEW FRIEND

Posted by dailyheights on Friday 21 April 2006 at 12:16 pm

What have you done for me lately? RBG writes in the Prospect Heights Message Boards :

“About a month ago, one of the guys who hangs out on St. Johns came over to me and asked whether or not I have a computer. When I said, yes, he asked … ‘Will you please print out my resume?’ … John Doe gave me a sheet of paper with his educational creditials and work history written out in longhand … At first, I was like, ‘WTF? He wants me to format, type out, print, and deliver this resume??’

“… while typing out the resume, I learned that someone that I’d dismissed for years as just another hustler is in fact, a licensed electrician. He has a HS diploma …”

“This morning, as I was on my way to work, John Doe was in front of his building with all the other guys, hanging out…I waved as I always do … and he came over and said, ‘Thank you for doing that resume for me….It worked…I GOT A JOB!!’… I told him I was proud of him, and commented that his new gold fronts and flashy new sunglasses…”

WHO CAN TOP THAT?? Apollonia666 can: “Last Wednesday morning, I got on the 4 at Franklin Avenue. A lady was eating fruit and when she finished, she realized that she had gotten drops of reddish juice all over her coat, which was a light cream color. I gave her a Shout wipe.

Stray Voltage on Sterling Place

Posted by dailyheights on Thursday 20 April 2006 at 5:03 pm

From the Prospect Heights Message Boards:

jimbo79 writes: “My dog seems to have identified stray voltage in front of 398 Sterling Place. We used to pass that way twice a day on our walks. About a month ago, I noticed would hold back as I approached this spot, and then race ahead as fast as he could, in both cases as far as the length of the leash would allow. I shrugged it off at first but then he became reluctant to even leave the house at walk time. Then I realized he was showing the same behavior that he showed at the Underhill Avenue hot spot in 2004…”

“Back in 2004, this dog exhibited the same behavior, laying back then skipping ahead, each day as we passed a spot on Underhill between Sterling and St. Johns. I thought it was weird that he always did that at the same spot, but didn’t think it was serious. Then one day when there was a lot of melted snow and salt on the sidewalk, my other dog (RIP), who never before had seemed to react, fell over on his side, writhing in pain…”

New Game: GentriConfrontation ™ !

Posted by dailyheights on Monday 17 April 2006 at 11:29 am

boardgame.jpgpensodyssey announces in the Prospect Heights Message Boards:

It’s strange! It’s savage! It’s cruel! It’s called… GentriConfrontation ™ !!!

Here’s how you play: all you have to do is see how quickly you can turn any topic into an “anti-gentrification” rant!

Example: Suppose a person posts on where the best place to buy beer is. You could respond sensibly (”The Met on Vanderbilt has really improved its selection”), or you could reply humorously (”I really like the beer at Jackie’s 5th Amendment”). These would be good replies… but if you want to win GentrifiConfrontation ™, you’d have to reply like this:

“Back in the day, you could only get 40’s of OE there. Too bad all the yuppies moved in.”

YOU’VE BEEN GENTRICONFRONTED!! DO NOT PASS SODA, DO NOT COLLECT YOU CRACK VIALS!!!

C’mon everybody! It’s as fun as kids in bars, it’s as free as apartments on
Crazy Lane, and it’s easier than a boycott!!

STRATEGY TIP: How to Meet Halle Berry on Bergen St.

Posted by dailyheights on Friday 14 April 2006 at 10:48 pm

Portrait of Halle Berry by Greg Spence Wolf

Originally uploaded by dailyheights.com.

cvc reports on the Prospect Heights Message Board:”Halle Berry movie to be filmed on Bergen Street, at least according to the ‘No Parking’ tell-tale pink movie flyer. The movie is called ‘Perfect Stranger.’ Cars have to be moved on Monday night at 9.”

metulj asks: “Is it a ‘Move your car or it will get moved to the nearest safe, legal spot’ deal?”

“… I got $200 out of a movie production crew in Knoxville, TN (Box of Moonlight) once because they wanted me to move my car from in front of my house. They said they had permission to tow all cars yada yada. I told them that if I saw a tow truck backing up to my car I would start punching tickets.”

“I was asked how much it would take to get me to move the car on my own. I figured 2 C-notes would cover it. Got to eat lunch with John Turturro too.”

“Now there’s a strategy to meet Halle Berry (unless you are a hater). Box of Moonlight is an excellent flick, IMHO.”

Goodbye, Crazy Lane

Posted by dailyheights on Friday 14 April 2006 at 10:07 am

The stretch of St. Johns Place between Underhill and Washington, known to DHers as “Crazy Lane” (who started that?) is apparently making large strides toward sanity, or at least gentrification.

RBG writes in the Prospect Heights Message Boards: “On my block alone, there are 3 buildings in which owners are not renewing leases and just a few days ago a FOR SALE sign went up on a Section-8 building…”

Jack Krohn says: “Wow, that’s great news! That should speed up the gentrification of so-called ‘Crazy Lane’, something that I support without apology.”

Is it true? Apparently so. Ben posted this from the Massey Knakal website:

355 & 427 Saint John Place, Brooklyn, NY (Saint Johns Place between Washington Avenue and Underhill Avenue)

These are two 4-story multifamily buildings with approximately 28,986 square feet, located on Saint Johns Place between Underhill Avenue and Washington Avenue. There are a total of 32 apartments. In addition, there are air-rights for approximately 15,176 square feet of residential space. The buildings were renovated 1983 under the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Project-Based Section 8 Program. The owner did not renew the Section 8 status for the buildings. This is a great investment opportunity. Asking Price: $5,000,000″

Carnivore notes that this works out to only $172 per square foot, not even counting the value of the air rights, which seems really low. Anybody got $1 million in cash for a down payment?

“Park Slope” Condos… in Crown Heights

MikeWalton718 reports in the Prospect Heights Message Boards: “The ‘Park Slope Garage’ on Sterling Place btw Washington and Classon is being rennovated, or more likely torn down to make way for brand new condos…”

“I know what you all are thinking: ‘Park Slope Garage’? Isn’t that in Crown Heights? The answer would be yes, but on the other hand, they’ve been abandoned for like 8ish years, I hear and they were infested with rats. I think it’ll be neato. I hope anyway.”

Fresh Direct Truck Out of Control

“One of the car owners was there when it happened and she seemed to take it well … I just stuck around long enough to see the look on the driver’s face when he came out of the building to find his truck moved, all Christine-like. Comedy gold.”

“Did anyone else see it?”

Jamzer adds: “A good argument could be made that it is safer for all of us when these trucks do not have drivers…”

Add this to the growing collection of stories about FreshDirect drivers, including the notable FreshDirect delivery guy “mugging” reported on Metroblogging NYC.

Not to mention this story from Captain M: “Last year in midtown, I chased down a FreshDirect truck (driver) who was driving with his back doors open. Normally, I would have just followed and waited for goodies to fall out of the back, but I was on a date and wanted her to think I had some morals and stuff.”

Nut Milk Man: Completely Nutty Ater All?

Posted by dailyheights on Saturday 8 April 2006 at 9:36 pm

dan-hoyt-exposed.jpgNew York Magazine has a long post-script article on the saga of Dan Hoyt, the raw foods magnate who became “last year’s most infamous subway masturbator” when he was arrested and convicted of public lewdness last fall.

Dan had who had already been arrested once in 1994 for a lewd display on the N/R platform at 8th Street. More recently, he made the mistake of exposing himself to a Thao Nguyen, a 22-year-old female web designer who happened to have a 1.3-megapixel camphone in her purse.

The photo of Dan Hoyt, caught in the act, was posted on a number of websites, including this one, laundromatic.com, citynoise.org, and flickr, which eventually led to his identification and arrest.

Today, he doesn’t appear to be very apologetic, at least in this article. After fixing the reporter a glass of his famous “nut milk”, Hoyt reflects on the aftermath “As for his R-train exploits, Hoyt says, ‘I’ve met women who enjoy it. After this incident happened, I had a woman tell me, ‘You know, that sounds exciting to me.’ She wouldn’t mind being on the other end.”

“In his account, the perpetrator is Nguyen, who misread his intentions (he claims he was already mid-masturbation when she stepped onto the train) and then humiliated him by posting his picture on the Web.”

“Hoyt believes that if he and Nguyen had only met under different circumstances, she might really like him. ‘You know, she’d go, “That guy’s pretty cool. He’s got this restaurant, and he’s fun… she’d probably want to go out with me.

Freddy’s Boycotts Brooklyn Beer; Hosts 1-Year CRINGE Anniversary

“We had hoped that the Brooklyn Brewery would take a stand with us, on, what we believe is the correct side of the issue for Brooklyn, but the Brewery disagrees with us, and instead stands to make a lot of money if (or when) they sell Brooklyn Beer in the arena.

“We are merely one small account to the Brooklyn Brewery, but this is our home, our lively ‘Hood’, this is a culture, and a thriving community.”

In other news, this Wednesday is the 1-year anniversary “best of” CRINGE reading night at Freddy’s…
