Should SODA Bar Ban Kids?

“if kids in Soda is bugging you now … well. wait a few weeks. when they open up the patio, the joint is kid central til 9 p.m. almost every single day. it doesn’t bother me at all, though. as others have said in this post and the countless others on this board, Soda isn’t an upscale, fancy restaurant, nor is it a busted-ass, broke-down drunkard bar. it’s a neighborhood pub. and, thankfully, that allows it to have an eclectic clientele.” - alafairnadia in the Prospect Heights Message Boards

Sounds like SODA on Vanderbilt Ave. now has their own “Stroller Manifesto” — an angry screed written by a non-parent who can’t tolerate the irresponsible parents who bring their babies/toddlers to bars. Apparently, this angry customer wants Toly, the proprietor of SODA, to ban kids from his establishment.

From what one Daily Heights regular reports: the complaint was specifically in response to a gathering that took place on the same night as a recent DH happy hour… though it was only indirectly related to a DH happy hour. We haven’t seen the letter yet, but it apparently contains some wild and somewhat humorous inaccuracies about what took place that night.

The opinions of this irate customer aside, the facts are as follows:

Toly absolutely encourages parents to bring kids to SODA…

The waitstaff is almost universally accommodating to kids…

They have lots of kid-friendly food …

The kids are generally out of there no later than 8 or 9 pm, latest…

The kids are being supervised, even if they seem to be running amok through the back room …

And in fact, “Music for Aardvarks” holds kids music classes at SODA at least 3 times a week.

So unquestionably, SODA is a kid-friendly bar.

Whoa… “kid-friendly bar”? The concept is certainly going to be quite confusing (and offensive) to Marge in Wisconsin… but kid-friendly bars are here, and you’re going to have to get used to them. Families want to hang out together. European countries have a long tradition (see Germany: Beer Gardens) of establishments where both kids and parents alike can hang out and socialize, and yes, alcohol may be served.

“Each of us has inhabited our apartments for about 4-5 years, and we all have a really low rent…”

“1.) A few weeks ago we get a notice of a past due bill for the water. Our landlord hasn’t paid it since January. The total? Over $4000.”

“2.) Then we get a bill saying our landlord hasn’t paid the electric bill and our electricity in our hallways is in danger of being shut off. (It’s still on, but I’m assuming only a matter of time before it’s shut off)”

“3.) Finally, this past weekend, we got a notice that our landlord has not paid the heat bill, and it will be shut off on March 30th. Thank God that by then, it’ll be warm enough to live without heat - except for at night. This kinda scares me… “

car service

Originally uploaded by Brooklyn Kim.

I had a couple things that I wanted to sell in that Isoldit Ebay store on Flatbush Ave. So I put the things - a juicer, camera and blender - into two small-medium boxes. I called the car service I always use - Legends.”

(fast forward through a dispute over the fare…)

“…I told him that I’d NEVER been asked to pay upfront before and that I wasn’t appreciating his attitude at all. He said, ‘I’m not driving you anywhere unless you pay me first you NIGGER BITCH. In fact, get the FUCK OUT OF MY CAR. I won’t drive you anywhere. Take your boxes and get out.’ “

“This went on. And on … He pointed to a dog on the sidewalk and said that I was a lower form of life than the dog … That the ‘piece of shit’ building I live in (which happens to be a beautiful brownstone) is ‘nothing’ compared to the house that he and his family live in.”

“… By the time the second driver arrived, there was such a scene going on, with the driver screaming, ‘TAKE YOUR BOXES OUT OF MY CAR, YOU NIGGER SCUM,’ that a passing police van stopped and four officers got out to find out what the hell was going on …”

“The irony is that the driver in question is Egyptian. Never knew the Egyptians had a pathological hatred of their fellow Africans (I’m actually African as opposed to African American). The cops - who all looked Hispanic told the guy to chill out and said, ‘look, we’re ALL minorities here.’ The driver denied that he was a minority and said that he shouldn’t have to drive ‘people like me’ anywhere…”

PH/CH Has a New (Touchy-Feely) Sports Bar

Posted by dailyheights on Thursday 16 March 2006 at 8:23 am

What self-respecting frat boy would pound back the beers at a sports bar that invites patrons to “Come Share the Love” and “Enjoy the Happiness”? Here’s the new hand-painted sign up at P.K.’s Sports Bar/Restaurant, Ltd. on the corner of Washington and Park (former home of Utopia):

We’ll wait to hear back from pete_c, who in the Prospect Heights Message Boards announces his intentions to indulge in “Real Guy” activities:

“I’m not a huge fan of the big loud fratty sports bar — unless they have really, really good bar food, see O’Keefe’s over by the courthouse — but this week, my opinion must change.”

“Yes, it’s the first and second round of the NCAA Men’s IA Basketball Tournament. This event brings out the latent frat-boy sports-bar section of my personality … So, for the next few weeks - yay sports bar! Maybe I’ll stop in on my way back from Hedda Gabbler at BAM tomorrow night, for a little cultural dissonance.”

The Underberg Building is Coming Down

Posted by dailyheights on Thursday 9 March 2006 at 10:54 pm

underberg.jpgFrom the New York Times: “State law forbids developers to physically alter the site of any proposed project until it has been officially approved, but makes an exception for “emergency actions” to guard public safety.”

moufaisbad writes in the Prospect Heights Message Boards:

this was on NY1 today.”

“I love that Ratner is trying to make it seem as if he is demolishing the buildings for ‘public safety.’ If that was actually the case and he was losing sleep over the poor endangered neighborhood, why didn’t he have them demolished last year, since he said that’s when the engineers told him that they were unsafe?”

Not sure if it’s elated, but according to EmilyM, there has been a strong police presence in the station recently (separate from the bag checks–on the platforms and in the station in the evening when there aren’t checks).

More Hating on Hipster Clothing Outlet

BI-bomber.jpgHot on the heels of allegations that Brooklyn Industries is co-opting “bike culture”, selling poorly made clothes, and being really uncool about returns, we’ve got more comments from isadora, who reported Saturday in blog comments here on Daily Heights:

“Their winter jackets do not conform with necessary laws that require them to clearly state the type/amount of down. I think they are completely getting over of clueless hipsters who care more about brand than quality. It’s a shame.”

Maybe somebody from Brooklyn Industries can respond to these comments and clear up the confusion. The description of the Einstein Bomber (right) clearly states “50% down 50% feathers”. This is not enough info? Do we need to know where the down came from?

Exploding Manhole!

Posted by dailyheights on Sunday 5 March 2006 at 1:21 pm

3306transformerexplosion1.jpgUPDATE on all the flickering lights, brownouts and explosions Friday at Lincoln and Underhill…

rockhound files an eyewitness report in the Prospect Heights Message Boards:

“Two major booms happened, then minor explosions followed. Thick black smoke poured from one of the holes. Two manholes were involved; it looks like one cover flew several feet through the air. Note damaged asphalt around hole.”

More from krs10a posted in blog comments below:

“I heard two loud explosions around 8:30. I called 911, and was told it was a ‘manhole fire’, and a fire engine was already on the scene.”

“A customer in Sabra (deli) said he saw a manhole cover shoot two stories into the air, but this is unconfirmed.”

“A super for a building on Lincoln Place said there was a car that was forced upward by the force of a manhole cover under it…”

UPDATE from pete_c “Transformer exploded. (No word on whether it was Autobot or Decepti^H^H oh, never mind.) Con Ed was onsite and not looking too terribly worried (do they ever?) when I walked my animal back from the big park at about 9:15am.”

“The manhole cover in front of Lucky The Ghetto Poodle’s old laundromat was taped off with fun red ‘DANGER HAZARDOUS MATERIALS’ tape. So everyone be extra careful about that stray voltage, mmkay?”

Minutes later, two cop cars and an ambulance showed up.”

“That’s such a highly trafficked part of Washington (near Eastern Parkway) that time of night, I’m shocked a robbery/assualt would happen there at that time.”

“The smell of the marijuana was unmistakable in the hallway of 699 Classon Ave., police sources said, yet it did not appear anyone had called to complain about the odor.”

classony writes in the Prospect Heights Message Boards: “The smell of marijuana is frequently unmistakable in our hallway and I don’t even live on the pot farm floor. Can you imagine if someone called 911 every time there caught a weed whiff?

“Who knew there were over 200 plants though? Our aloe is struggling. Too bad the 5th floor botanists won’t be around to give tips.”
