Is Google an agent against Outdoor Loudness Season?

Posted by IsaChandra on Tuesday 5 April 2005 at 3:01 pm

cubancowboyssmall1.jpg On St. Johns Place there is always plenty of activity during Outdoor Loudness Season (OLS). There is a girl in the next building over that plays guitar on her roof while singing at the top of her lungs. A neighbor a few floors up plays saxophone or some such wind instrument. And let us not leave out the piano man coming from who knows where and hosting speakeasies where people sing what appears to be the Fame soundtrack well into the wee hours of the morning. Last spring I thought I would participate in OLS by filming a music video on my roof with Cuban surf rock band The Cuban Cowboys. No sooner did the George Bush piñata get strung up then did a woman in a house coat come up to the roof and tell us to shut the hell up. Perhaps she had employed a beta version of Google Satellite Maps and saw what we were up to. Just enter 11238 into the search and click the “Satellite” link on the upper right to see who the heck it is up there making all that racket. By the way, 3 days after my failed Outdoor Loudness, this lock appeared on the door to the roof.

What Will Shaya Do (WWSD) for Dean St. Playground? Find out Saturday

Posted by dailyheights on Tuesday 5 April 2005 at 10:40 am

We’re a little short on details, but apparently Shaya Boymelgreen’s Newswalk condo development disregarded a requirement to keep green space open. Now, to make up for that, they have agreed to pay for renovations at the Dean St. Playground.

NOTICE: The next meeting of the Friends of Dean Street Playground
PLACE: The Evangelical Church, 506 Bergen Street
DATE: Saturday, April 9th
TIME: 3 PM

“a ‘Friends’ group has been long overdue,” says Paul, a member of that group. “We can do a lot on our own without (Boymelgreen’s) money, but if there is money forthcoming, better it be advised by a group from neighborhood, and not city bureaucrats — besides, the Parks Dept. does need our help.”

New Yahoo Group: Crown Heights Parents

Posted by dailyheights on Tuesday 5 April 2005 at 8:54 am

Ellen writes: “In response to several inquiries regarding a similar forum for parents in Crown Heights, and my own desire to connect with like minded folks, I have created a new yahoo group to fullfill this need. If you live in or around Crown Heights, please join the crownheightsparents yahoo group by sending an email to crownheightsparents-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. And please pass the word to others you may know in the area!”

NEW PLAY GROUPS: “Of course the name and mission is similliar to parkslopeparents - please consider imitation a form of flattery! I also will host a new/second time parents group/playgroup based at the Brooklyn’s Children Museum/Brower Park and my house (days and times to be determined).”
