PROSPECT HEIGHTS FAMINE: Rash of Summer Closings

Posted by dailyheights on Thursday 17 July 2008 at 10:32 am

Joyce closed… Christie’s closed… El Gran Castillo de Jagua (home of the Meat Vent) closed… What’s next?

meganlibrarian writes:

Last night I arrived back in NYC after 2 weeks away. I went for a quick walk, at the end of which I decided that I wanted a coco bread to go with dinner. Walking toward Christie’s at 7PM, I noticed that their gate was down and signs were up in the windows. Heart sinking, I walked up and read one of the signs: on vacation from 7/14-7/21, opening again on 7/22.

I damned near had a heart attack. Meat Vent’s DOH’ed and Christie’s is closed for vacation? What in the hell do I do for my weekend lunches?!?

Gentrification Begets Bedbugs - And Brokers are Mum

Posted by dailyheights on Tuesday 15 July 2008 at 9:51 pm

RBG writes on the Prospect Heights message board at Brooklynian.com:

WHICH LOCAL REAL ESTATE AGENT … is showing apartments in a building on St. Johns place that is infested with bedbugs?

She’s not telling unsuspecting renters why the apartments are vacant although the mattresses, bedding, futon, and furniture outside of the building should be a dead giveaway. Buyer beware.

Sadly, a moving truck was outside 349 St. Johns this weekend. If you walk past the building, you’ll see a ton of furniture with the word “bedbugs” spraypainted in red paint. I think these are the third tenants to move out in a month. The unidentified real estate broker continues to knowingly re-rent apartments in the infested building. The word on the street is that old-time tenants in the building are very angry. For years, they lived in the apartments (albeit with drug dealers, noise, etc.) and didn’t have bedbugs until new people moved in and started bringing in old furniture from off the street…

Save The Letters! ASSOCIATED Market Turns Organic

I’ve requested the remaining letters of the as_oc_i_ted, want one?

For those of you who are not aware, the run down former Associated on Underhill has closed, and will soon re-open as an organic fruit and veggie store.

To me, the event symbolizes the final blow to the previous version of my corner of Prospect Heights. As one walks on Underhill, Sepia (and the resturant next door) arrived a few years ago, and ice cream place recently opened.

Is this an event to celebrate or mourn? It doesn’t matter, as the subtitle reports, I’ve requested the remaining letters (plastic, gross, perhaps roach infested…). The contractor said “sure, they come off next week and I’ll save ‘em for you”

If I end up actually getting them, I hereby pledge to give them to anyone interested in celebrating (or mourning) the end of an era on Underhill.

If you’d like one, post how you will sterilize them, and display them proudly…. assuming the contractor follows thru as planned, the letters will be given away at Sepia next week….

Prospect Heights a Historic District? -Update

Posted by dailyheights on Monday 14 July 2008 at 7:39 am

On Gowanus Lounge:

The creation of a Prospect Heights Historic District is making progress. The Landmarks Preservation Commission will “calendar” the district this Tuesday (7/15), which is the first step in formally creating it…

The Chair of the PHNDC says: “The Landmarks Commission has obviously recognized the threat posed to the character of one of Brooklyn’s most well-preserved brownstone neighborhoods. The pressure from the Atlantic Yards project and other recent developments are of grave concern to the hundreds of local residents who have written in support of historic designation for Prospect Heights.”

The Con Ed Bulbs: Can Fluorescent Light Be Bearable?

Posted by dailyheights on Sunday 3 February 2008 at 11:39 pm

Do you care so much about the environment (or your electric bill) that you would put up with dingy, soul-sucking fluorescent light in your most sacred of spaces? Or are Con Ed’s free CFLs really a great leap forward from the stark, buzzing, flickering blue bulbs that dutifully lit your grandfather’s utility shed?

dojoji writes on the Brooklynian.com Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards: “Has anyone gotten the free light bulb exchange from ConEd? The guy is here right now–on a ladder–changing all my lightbulbs for me. They are called CFL (fluorescent) and they work fine and light the room in the same way that regular bulbs do. So I’m not complaining–and if my electric bill goes down then I’ll be REALLY excited.”

“He says it saves 75% on energy from the lights.
Funny story–he says Brooklyn residents are holding out because they do not trust Con Ed. LOL. They expect it to take 4 years for Brooklyn residents to fully convert.”

So are CFLs going to be recommended by HGTV designers any time soon? sweet tea responds: “i relented and let one of these guys replace some of my bulbs….enh. i didn’t do the lamps or the kitchen overhead because i hate the quality of light from the CFLs. yeah, they’re better than they were 15 years ago when my dad first started buying them from our neighbor with the solar roof, but they’re not that much better. i find the light ugly and depressing.”

Our Building is Switching to Biofuel

Just this past week, the Board of our building (of which I am President) made the decision to switch to biofuel over oil for our heating needs.
With the cost of oil continuing to skyrocket, significant dependence on foreign oil and ever-escalating news of global warming impacts, we made the decision even though there is a slightly higher cost annually.

I would invite other buildings and homeowners to look into this for themselves at http://www.tristatebiodiesel.com/. The process has been easy thus far and we believe it will be of huge benefit to our 20-unit building and the neighborhood at large over time.

Mooney’s Closing; Emergency Happy Hour Planned

EasternPkwyQ writes on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

“Mr. Mooney received an eviction notice on October 30th, giving him 30 days to get out. Apparently, the landlord raised the rent from $xxxx to $xxxx and Mooney countered with an offer of $xxxx. The response he received was the eviction notice.”

“Seems pretty extreme - I’m sure they’re hoping that American Apparel’s good buddies at Starbucks or some such place will take over the location. It makes me nauseous.”

“For me, this is a tremendous loss of a lovely neighborhood gathering spot. It may not be the hippest or the most glamorous, but it’s such a great place to meet and talk to your neighbors - people from all backgrounds gather there and actually interact with one another. I have met some wonderful people there who I now count amongst closest friends.”

“The landlord is Lina Fang of Johore Realty - the same person (or at least so I hear) that has evicted Royal Video. I don’t know what else they own, but I certainly plan to boycott whatever takes over these leases and I hope others will do the same. This isn’t Manhattan and we live here because it’s not Manhattan and we want local business owners who actually contribute to - and care about - the neighborhood and the people in it. Mooney’s does that and this is a tremendous loss to Prospect Heights and Park Slope.” Read more on this thread: Mooney’s Evicted! (Brooklynian.com)

Strangers Peering Into Fire Escapes (Underhill Ave.)

I got home tonight and noticed by the mailboxes that a tenant put up a sign that she saw someone peeping into her place through the fire escape in the back of the building during the early AM hours.
There was a followup note by another tenant that the same thing happened to them, and comments written on both by at least 5-7 other tenants that this too has happened to them during this week.
The two main writers did write that they called 911 to report this, because when they saw the person and screamed, he ran up the fire escape to the roof.

Beyond Pathetic: Passing Fake $20s at a Prospect Heights Stoop Sale

Posted by dailyheights on Saturday 8 September 2007 at 11:52 pm

UPDATE: At least two other stoop sales got burned by this guy (or these guys) this past weekend. See the thread for details: stoop sale counterfeit $ scam– beware

a few folks had a stoop sale today on the corner of park and vanderbilt. turns out when one of us tried to use some of the $, she learned we had been given two fairly undetectable counterfeit 20$ bills in the sale– and given back the counterfeiter 15-18$ in change on two separate occasions.

obviously we’ve been scammed for the cash. we think we know by whom– and i think this person’s been going around and doing this at many stoop sales in brooklyn. just a warning to check the 20$ bills for all those stoop sale-ers.

these counterfeit bills are shiny and a little smaller and do not appear real when held up to the light. not everyone is honest in our hoods and it sucks to have our wholesome little sale soured. it’s just not cool, it’s illegal, and it’s not like we’re raking in the dough selling off our two dollar books and cds to bolster our student loans.

stoop sale enterpeneurs, beware!

Terriers Beware: “Light-Skinned Asian” Skateboarders in BoCoCa

I for one think that skateboarders can reach speeds of more than 50 mph… I was walking through BocoCa last wed and several light skinned Asian men flew by me on these boards almost killing my Boston Terrier. Police in this area should really not hesitate to bring in these characters and charge them with whatever crime they probably committed.

Okay, so what’s the deal with you people? As a driver, day after day it amazes me how inept so many of you are at riding bikes in the streets of the city, particularly in this, and surrounding neighborhoods.

Here’s what I see: you don’t ride at the speed of traffic, preferring to leisurely pedal at 5 mph, without a care in the world. You often ride two, or even three abreast, in order to better facilitate conversation with your biking buddies as you make your way down streets. You even ride against traffic on narrow streets and get mad when honked at. You have been seen riding so far from the curb and parked cars that you end up in the path of moving cars. You don’t use headlights at night (illegal), hand signals, bells, and you almost never look over your shoulders.

To top it all off, most of you don’t even wear helmets, which baffles me.

As a former bike messenger, daily driver, and native New Yorker, the only thing that makes me curse out loud in my car is how so many of you bike like you’re on a sun-dappled, suburban sidewalk. It makes me furious, really.

I don’t know when this happened in New York. Used to be, bikers and drivers had an understanding, and a certain rhythm in the streets of this city. Sure, there have been accidents, and middle fingers flipped, and filthy words hurled, but jeez, at least traffic used to move.

Last thing I have to say to you “bikers” is: learn how to ride those super cool, retro metro, “I bought this $25 bike so I can sport a $100 Kryptonite chain,” bikes. It would make a lot of pedestrians, and drivers a lot happier.

Video Edge: Another Casualty of Netflix?

Posted by dailyheights on Thursday 30 August 2007 at 3:36 pm

Playing a bit of catch-up here… but what happened to Video Edge, the “alternative” video store on Flatbush (you know, the one just a few blocks down from that “other” video store…). Here is an update from Asil, posted on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards:

They merged with another video store, I don’t remember the name, on 7th Ave. around Carroll or Garfield. There was a sign up on the window of Video Edge a few weeks ago that said the change was “due to the changing rental climate.” That could mean both rising rent on the physical space and DVD rental competition from Netflix. I would guess that both were a factor.

All Video Edge customers are supposed to automatically have an account now at the other place.
Really sad. It was a great store.

Waiting for the "Second Half": Coming Soon?

Posted by dailyheights on Wednesday 29 August 2007 at 8:45 am

It’s been a few months since mysteriously “energetic men in suits” were spotted in the Fermented Grapes shop, talking about the second coming of Half (the short-lived wine bar on Vanderbilt). TrautmanG, who claims he’s one of those suits, reported that the place is to be called Plan B, though they apparently liked our “Second Half” suggestion, and also considered calling it “Diet Soda” (ha, ha).

Here’s what TrautmanG had to say about the place:The name Plan B is for Brooklyn, bar, burger etc. Also means its a casual place without pretension, and is my own personal Plan B … in addition to standard fare (burgers, wings, fries) etc will offer healthy choices and rotating specials. We will have a kids menu as well … (Read more)”

What is the latest? Apparently construction continues, and the liquor license application may take a while. Look for more updates on the “Half…hmmm” thread on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards

Why did you choose to live in Prospect Heights?

I chose to live here because it is convenient to school and work. I am within a few blocks of six trains. I’m only 10-15 minutes from Manhattan. The rent is decent. There are a lot of shops, restaurants, bars, etc. that are convenient to me. That’s it.

No, I’m not in Mayberry anymore, but so far it’s been a good experience. I like this neighborhood for the most part. Now I only hope to meet a few neighbors. Then it’ll officially feel like home.

This last friday night (saturday am) I was mugged around 50 yards after exiting the 7th Ave Q stop and walking towards Vanderbilt on Park Place ….

I set myself up. I was very very intoxicated. I had just vomited on the street a few seconds earlier and was stumbling home. … Someone puts me in a sleeper hold from behind and I see someone running towards me in a grey hoodie …

Next thing, I’m waking up on the ground with the faint sound of someone sprinting away. Wallet + cellphone gone. Thank god they left my keys.

Moral of the story: Don’t … get wasted and walk home alone at 3 am. Watch your back. I would have robbed me too….if that’s how I made money. I was completely defenseless.

… I was at work tonight (Saturday) when my girlfriend called me around 10:30. She said she was leaving our apartment on Underhill btw Sterling and St Johns when she heard loud gunshots nearby. She knows the sound well because of the rooftop shooting last week, also on our block.

She opened the door … There was a man half-running/ limping towards St. Johns, where he met with a group of women and collapsed on the sidewalk. Bystanders saw that something was wrong and surrounded him, calling for help on their phones.

… this shooting happened directly in front of my apartment … it seems like there has been no violent crime in our little area (by the library, Grand Army Plaza, Vanderbilt) in at least a few years, though it’s remained constant a couple blocks away. What’s going on?

Drug Raid on Lincoln and Washington

Posted by dailyheights on Friday 13 July 2007 at 1:36 pm

Loverly crooklyn writes on the Prospect Heights Forum | DailyHeights.com Message Boards: “I have watched as the drug dealers on my corner take over my street over the past 6 months. It seemed that nothing would be done. But finally, there was a raid on one of the main drug buildings on the block…”

“Last night, as I pulled into Lincoln Place to park my car after a night of grocery shopping, I was stopped by five SUVs blocking the road. I got out ready to scream at someone, and call the police to come and clear the traffic, when someone at the corner told me, it was the police.”

“I call 311 at least once a week to complain about the gang of hoodlums playing dice in front of my stoop. At night, I have to park on St. Johns, because all the dealer’s friends and customers have taken up every legal, and illegal, parking spot. I am constantly walking around waiting for the gunshots to come out because I never know how bad it could get.”

“I know that this raid is not a cure-all, but … it’s a step in the right direction.”

“High Stakes” Cheesesteak: A Philly Perspective

Posted by dailyheights on Friday 6 July 2007 at 6:54 am

Jimmy_Sunshine writes on the Prospect Heights Message Boards:
“As a very recent transplant to Prospect Heights with a lifetime in Philly … I figured I should add my $.02 … I ate in at High Stakes Cheese Steaks a couple of weeks ago. Though it wasn’t a bad sandwich, it wasn’t a cheese steak.”

“For starters, there was some seasoning on the meat, which isn’t necessary if you use good quality rib eye steak, and is something you’ll never find in Philly. Secondly, the steak should be sliced thin before being chopped up on the grill. This was definitely not the case at High Stakes - the consistency was all wrong. Lastly, the roll was more like something from Subway than a proper Italian roll.”

“The cheese wiz was actually spot-on, but that’s hardly noteworthy since it comes in a large bomb-resistant can with no expiration date.”

So, since you live only a 2-hr drive or just over a 1-hr train ride from Philly, I suggest you check out the real thing. I would recommend Pat’s, Geno’s, or Tony Luke’s in South Philly, Jim’s on South Street, Chink’s in the Northeast, D’Allesanro’s in Roxborough, or, frankly, just about any decent pizza or hoagie[?] place with a grill.”

“Oh, and one more thing, with service as slow as High Stakes (I waited 15 mins for a cheese steak when there were only about 4 customers in the place), they’d be out of business in Philly faster than you can say, ‘wiz wit’.”

Now… about that delivery guy who’s chronically out of change…

“Though generally satisfied with their service, I feel like they set their driers to ’surface of the sun’ temperature levels. Frequently, clothes that I’ve owned and had laundered for months or years come back from B’works noticeably smaller…

“I’ve seen laundry.bz mentioned before on this site — can anyone chime in about them? I like that they offer low-temp drying (for an extra charge), but i’m wary of a place without a storefront and with a somewhat non-professional looking website.”

“Congestion Pricing” and Commute: Will it Work?

Posted by dailyheights on Wednesday 25 April 2007 at 6:32 am

Limestone Kid writes on the Brooklynian.com message boards: “What are people’s thoughts on Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal about congestion pricing?”

“Personally, I’m in favor of it. I walk to work in downtown Brooklyn, and it’s amazing the number of vehicles that are occupied by only the driver. If it gets cars off the road, then I’ve in favor it.”

Does it work? thirtythreesixty writes: “London pre- and post- congestion charging is a different city to walk around in and commute in…the system works incredibly well… “

Are people in favor of it? Overwhelmingly… at least on the Brooklynian boards. As of this writing, there is only one (relatively) negative comment: “As usual, what initially sounds like a good idea - ends up sucking for people who need their cars every day to get to work because of lack of public transport options,” Livetotravel says. “Where’s Bloomberg’s proposal for offering incentives to car pool?”
