The Phantom Apartment Building on Prospect Place

Posted by dailyheights on Wednesday 27 April 2005 at 10:41 am

303ProspectPl.jpgVia Susan: “On Saturday morning, there was nothing much on TV except for Ghost, so I watched it. At some point, Patrick Swayze tells Demi Moore (via Whoopi) that his killer is one Willie Lopez, 303 Prospect Place, Apt. 4D. … I walked up the block to find the address and came across a curious neighborhood mystery. There is no 303 Prospect Place…

Sam: I know the man who killed me … His name is Willie Lopez and I know where he lives … Write it down.

O.M.: I ain’t no damn secretary.

Sam: Just do it! God!

O.M.: He’s so testy. What is it you want me to write?

Sam: 303 Prospect Place Apartment 4D.

O.M.: 303 Prospect Place?

Sam: Yeah.

0.M.: It’s my neighborhood.

Sam: Molly, he’s got my wallet, he’s got my key and he was in here … Molly, you got to go to the police. It was a set up. I was murdered.

Some friends of mine brought this to my attention recently because I live at 425 Prospect Place, and they thought (incorrectly apparenetly) that the reference in Ghost was for 423 Prospect Place, which actually is a real address.

would you feel better if the address really existed and Willie Lopez really lived there?

I’m moving to that block soon–now I’m even more excited about it!

Here’s some more PH movie apocrypha I recently discovered. A couple of weeks ago I caught “Angels in America” at BAM. Near the end of the film, Meryl Streep and a couple of other characters get off the subway train at the Clark Street stop. But when they emerge from the station, they’re at the 7th Avenue stop (rechristened “Clark Street”). What, PH wasn’t good enough?

I actually saw that scene being filmed. They were setting up Meryl Streep for a shot when I passed by.

Wow, you watched Ghost? I’m sorry…

CORRECTION! CORRECTION! Actually my friend just reminded me it was “The Wiz”, not “Ghost” she was watching, and the address was, indeed, for the building right next to me, 433 Prospect Place. It’s where Dorothy lives! Prospect Place is apparently a popular setting for films.

    BUT WHERE’S MY HOME ?
    WHERE’S AUNT EM ?
    WHERE’S NEW YORK ?

    - NEW YORK ?
    - 433 PROSPECT PLACE.

    OOH !
    FOUR, THREE, THREE.

hmmm… i wonder if prospect place could have its own blog someday? and i wonder if they’ll think they’re better than everyone else who lives on neighboring streets because they do. i wonder if they’ll have some special camraderie that no one else understands. and then they’ll have their own happy hour at soda and not invite the rest of us, and we’ll all be stuck hanging out at the block party instead.

We should preempt their elitist orgy NOW before it gets out of hand. They need to be alienated.

Thank you Cablevision, for the hundreds of crappy channels and only Ghost to watch. But now I want to see The Wiz, and that’s even more pathetic.

I know this is an old post, but I just came across it.

The scene in GHOST that you are refering to was actually shot in the neighborhood, but the building they used in the movie was on PARK PLACE just west of Franklin Ave on the south side. The front entrance has an arch above it that you can recognize from the movie. I’m not sure of the house number but it is the first entrance on Park Place(next to the corner store)

I’ve been working down here for 25 years. I’ve seen alot of things.

It’s 638 Park Place; it’s the side entrance to the corner bldg

I lived at 438 Prospect until 1958. My grandparents owned the house and my mother’s family lived and grew up there also. My brother and I went to visit the neighborhood in November, 2007 and I saw some changes going on all for the good. It was a pretty nice neighborhood when I was growing up.
